Ford Transit wet belt failure: why a damaged belt can destroy an engine

Which Transit engines use a wet belt?

Why wet belt failure becomes such a major problem
Loss of valve timing
If a timing belt loses teeth, jumps or breaks, the camshaft and crankshaft can move out of synchronisation. On an interference engine, pistons may then contact valves. Bent valves, damaged pistons and cylinder-head damage can follow immediately.
Oil starvation caused by belt debris
The less obvious route can be equally destructive. Material shed from the belt enters the oil. Debris may gather at the oil-pump pickup strainer and reduce the flow reaching the engine. Turbocharger and bearing damage

Can the van be repaired with a new belt?
Possibly—if deterioration is caught early and tests show that timing, oil pressure and internal components remain healthy.
